भज गोविन्दम्

कुरुते गङ्गासागरगमनं व्रतपरिपालनमथवा दानम् । ज्ञानविहीनः सर्वमतेन भजति न मुक्तिं जन्मशतेन ॥१७॥

Word breakdown
- कुरुते गङ्गासागरगमनं
- One may go to the Ganges or the ocean,
- व्रतपरिपालनमथवा दानम् ।
- observe vows, or give gifts;
- ज्ञानविहीनः सर्वमतेन
- but without knowledge, by all these means
- भजति न मुक्तिं जन्मशतेन ॥१७॥
- one does not attain liberation in a hundred births.
Pilgrimage, vows, and giving are insufficient when they are disconnected from liberating knowledge. Ritual merit without jnana cannot uproot the ignorance that binds the soul to rebirth.
