Worship Govinda, worship Govinda,
worship Govinda, O foolish mind!
When the appointed time arrives close at hand,
grammar surely, surely does not save you.

The refrain redirects anxious learning toward remembrance of Govinda. When death nears, no amount of grammatical scholarship substitutes for devotion to the Lord who is the Self.

O fool, abandon the thirst for wealth to come;

Whatever wealth you gain through your own labour,
with that alone delight your mind.

Craving for ever more wealth is opposed to contentment with what comes through one's own action. True peace arises when the mind rests in what is earned rightly, not in endless accumulation.

Reflect again and again in the mind
that this is flesh, fat, and such changeable matter.

The verse interrupts objectifying fascination by recalling the body's impermanent materiality. Discrimination turns the gaze from surface attraction toward the truth that form is passing appearance.

Water on a lotus leaf is exceedingly unstable;

Know the whole world is seized by disease and pride,
and struck down by grief.

Water on a lotus leaf becomes the image of precarious life amid illness, pride, and grief. Seeing the world's fragility loosens the grip of worldly attachment.

As long as one is intent on earning wealth,

Later one lives in a decrepit old body,
and no one at home even asks one's welfare.

Conditional social affection is exposed by the decline of earning power and bodily strength. What seemed loyal devotion was often tied to utility, revealing the need for a refuge beyond shifting relationships.

As long as breath dwells in the body,

people at home inquire after one's welfare.
When the breath departs and the body falls,
even the wife fears that very body.

The departing life-breath reveals the difference between a living person and a body treated as an object. What the world loved was the presence of consciousness, not the corpse left behind.

in youth, absorbed in young women.
In old age one is absorbed in worry;
yet no one is absorbed in supreme Brahman.

Childhood, youth, and old age each have their absorption; Brahman is repeatedly postponed. Each life-stage offers its distraction while the one eternal aim remains neglected.

This world of becoming is exceedingly strange.
Of whom are you? Who are you? From where did you come?
Reflect on that truth here, O brother.

Questions about kinship and origin become an invitation to investigate the Self. When relationships are seen as contingent, the seeker turns toward the unchanging 'I' behind all roles.

From association with the good arises detachment;
from detachment arises freedom from delusion.
From freedom from delusion arises steady truth;
from steady truth arises liberation while living.

Good company is traced as a practical sequence toward freedom while living. Each step - satsanga, detachment, clarity, steadiness - leads the mind from confusion to the state of jivanmukti.

When wealth is gone, what family?
When truth is known, what world of becoming?

When supports vanish, the verse asks what remains once truth is known. Each worldly anchor dissolves in turn, leaving only the reality that survives every loss.

Leaving this entire enchanted world,

Time swiftly removes wealth, followers, and youth; knowledge points beyond their enchantment. Pride in passing gifts blinds the mind to the abiding Brahman that is one's true home.

yet hope does not release its hold on life.

Recurring days and seasons conceal the dwindling of life while hope continues to pull the mind. The calendar repeats but the lifespan does not; only awakening breaks the cycle of deferred liberation.

In the three worlds the companionship of the good alone
is the boat for crossing the ocean of becoming.

The companionship of the wise is offered as a boat across the ocean of becoming. When worldly supports fail, satsanga steadies the mind toward the shore of freedom.

External ascetic costumes are questioned when they serve livelihood rather than insight. Outward renunciation without inner transformation is mere performance for bodily sustenance.

Physical old age does not itself release the knot of expectation. The body declines but the mind's clinging persists until true knowledge cuts the root of desire.

Pilgrimage, vows, and giving are insufficient when they are disconnected from liberating knowledge. Ritual merit without jnana cannot uproot the ignorance that binds the soul to rebirth.

Simplicity and letting go are praised for the happiness of dispassion. True vairagya frees the mind from the anxiety of acquisition and opens the heart to inner joy.

Joy belongs to the mind that delights in Brahman, regardless of outer lifestyle. External conditions change but the bliss of abiding in the Self is constant.

Yama does not trouble him.

Even small, sincere contact with scripture, sacredness, and worship is valued over spiritual display. A single genuine turning toward the Lord outweighs a lifetime of empty ritual.

O Murari, save me with boundless grace.

The repetition of birth and death becomes a direct cry for Mura's enemy, Vishnu, to save. Recognising the horror of samsara, the devotee surrenders to the Lord who alone can ferry the soul across.

Self-inquiry questions inherited identity and compares worldly solidity to a dream. When the 'I' is traced to its source, the entire fabric of assumed relationships dissolves like sleep-vision.
