Chant

Study note

Word breakdown

When those who look on me know 'this is not he,'
and words become only 'this is breath,'
then clearly I shall meditate on you,
O Destroyer of the city, adorned with ash, bound by the bhujanga metre.

When onlookers see only breath in the dying body, the devotee will meditate clearly on Shiva. Recognition that 'this is not he' is the very discrimination that points toward the Self beyond the corpse.
